FOREST-CLIMATE CONNECT

Globally, forests are disappearing at an alarming rate—one acre every second—primarily to make way for expansive, low-cost farmland for mass production of commodities like beef, soy, palm oil, and timber, often resulting in barren wastelands.

THE STATE OF OUR FORESTS

Once spanning vast expanses of our planet, our forests now stand at a critical junction—alarming evidence points to the loss of half of Earth’s forests, a devastating development with the majority occurring in just the past 150 years. This rapid decline is fueled by an insatiable demand for commodities like beef, soy, palm oil, and wood products, leading to the ruthless clearing of tropical forests for agricultural land, often resulting in barren wastelands. Deforestation does not just strip away trees, biodiversity, habitats, clean water; it emits billions of tons of greenhouse gases annually, constituting about 17% of global emissions. To put this into perspective, this ecological catastrophe contributes more to the climate emergency than all the transportation vehicles in the world combined. The clock is ticking with every passing second, and with each acre lost, our battle against climate change becomes even more daunting.

  • Massive carbon emissions

  • Opening door to development

  • Creating “climate refugees”

  • Tragic loss of biodiverse forest

In locations such as Brazil’s Amazon, Africa’s Congo Basin, Sumatra, and Borneo, ecologically diverse forests that have existed for centuries are being systematically destroyed, posing a risk to 1.6 billion people who depend on forests, millions of plant and animal species, three-quarters of the world’s drinking water, and over 25% of all western medical cures.
